Good Old Fashioned Cool

I, like all the other kids, am totally into AMCs hit show Mad Med. I love the fashion and the design of the show.  And Don Draper (played to perfection by Jon Hamm since 2007) is the epitome of 1950s/60s coooooool.
Ahhh, the late 50s early 60s when the cocktail became king and every fashionable home sported a well-stocked bar. And nobody is/was more fashionable than the Drapers.
Don's cocktail of choice after a busy day of lies and manipulation and good old-fashioned misogeny?
An Old Fashioned, of course.
And what is the key ingredient in a top shelf Old Fashioned?
Kentucky Bourbon.
I like Woodford Reserve for this recipe just because I think that the spicy caramely notes really compliment the citrus while balancing the bitters. But, certainly, feel free to use your favorite Bourbon. Just don't even think about using Jack Daniels. That's not cool at all!

Old Fashioned
  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters
  • 1 oz water
  • 1 tsp sugar dissolved with water and bitters
  • 3 oz of Bourbon
  • 1 cherry
  • 1 orange slice
  • 1 lemon wedge

Fill glass with ice. Add cherry, orange slice and lemon wedge. Pour in bourbon. Serve in a rocks glass over ice.
